The “Water is Life” project is a mission of:
Jordan Station United Church
Vineland United Church
and many friends of the project
It began with a call back in early 2017, from John King with Hope International (a Canadian aid organization) to Rev. Anita Spiller, Minister at Jordan Station United Church and Vineland United Church asking if he could speak to the congregations about a need in the Dominican Republic. John asked Church Members to consider donating funds to the village of El Memiso, an impoverished village in the country’s mountains which was in the process of building a water delivery system. The congregation responded overwhelmingly, donating money to complete the installation of a pump and finish El Memiso’s entire water system.
Several months later (October 2017), a Mission Team from Jordan Station traveled with John King to the Dominican Republic visiting El Memiso to see their completed water project and, as well, numerous other villages suffering from lack of access to clean water. Mission Team members were touched by the generosity of residents who had so little and were humbled by their dire circumstances. Those interactions led to the “Water is Life” project for El Rosalito and a commitment to act.
In November 2018, we traveled back to the Dominican Republic to see the progress of the water project and to live and be in community with the residents of El Rosalito. With a few Spanish lessons we were finally able to communicate (somewhat) with the residents and learn their stories of life and hope for a better life with access to clean water. We were amazed to see how much work - digging trenches - has already been completed and the work that lies ahead.
